Speaking of Midwestern tattoos…
Check this old broad out. This is tattoo goddess and native Wisconsinite Artoria Gibbons.
Born Anna Mae Burlingston on a farm in Linwood, Wisconsin in Portage County, little Anna Mae was one of seven children to a family of Norwegian immigrants. In 1907 the family moved to Washington state where she met tattoo artist Charles Gibbons. They married in 1912 and had one daughter.
After a few years of marriage, they decided that they could make a better living if they joined the circus - if Anna Mae became a performing tattoo lady. So Charles tattooed her, in full color, with her favorite classical religious artwork.
Anna was deeply religious and was a lifetime member of the Episcopal Church. Her tattoos included angels and saints and even a few patriotic illustrations, including George Washington.
She’s pictured here with her husband Charles.
What a fucking badass Wisco chick.
